International Trade!

As we all know, the world revolves around trade. Goods are transported across the globe, wealth is created, fortunes made and lost and so it has been ever since a man wanted something that someone else had and that man did not want to take it with a fight. He wanted to live for another day and bartering for trade was his skill although a good many of them could fight with the best and in many case were ex soldiers.

History shows us that trade betwen people has been going on since the dawn of time.

Bartering for goods was the basis of payment and since gold and jewels were in as much demand then as they are now, one could barter their way from a load of fish for the miners of copper, take the copper and barter for a load of furs and trade those furs for gold!

See my Blog on International Trade for more of the history of trade!

Then by AD 1200, Europe was in the process of changing from a medieval agricultural economy to one based upon trade between different regions, which contributed to the growth of large urban centers. Travelling Caravans of Trade Merchants would roam from city to city setting up trade fairs in each one. The Merchants were granted speacial privlidges for the duration of the Trade Fair and the fairs were one of the highlights of the people. There would be goods for trade, jugglers and acrobates, singing and dancing, one big party! Not unlike the trade conventions we have now. The key man in all of the caravans was the leader. He generally had been over the route, had contacts at each stop, had a reputation of respect and he was the guide for the Trade Merchants.  He choose who would be in the caravan, (The really good leaders worked by consensus) he was the focal point for negotiating with the local governments and if he had the reputation of being a fighting man, the thieves would leave his caravan alone and await the next one.

If you think things have changed, then think again. Today, 2009 soon to be 2010, we still use trade fairs, we still have Trade Merchants and we have caravans, (think International Trade missions). There are still bands of roving outcasts willing to rob you of your goods, there is still war AND the people you meet overseas have a long history of bartering for the best deal.

If you truly beleive that you can take on these challenges by yourself, then by all means go forth and prosper.

If, on the other hand, you agree that there is strength in numbers and you would like to have your own Caravan Leader, then look no further than Wilson International Trade Consultants
